A few weeks ago, Ali and I were at a friend’s house, and we watched a movie called About Time. The movie is about, well, time. More specifically, it’s about time travel. Just to let you know, there’s going to be spoilers ahead.
The plot revolves around the fact that all the men in the Lake family can travel back to any time in their lives. They just have to go into a dark room, clench their fists, and think about the moment they wanted to relive, and then off they would go.
The film follows some of the common situations you would see in any time travel movie. Tim (the protagonist) goes back in time to fix mistakes, to help people out, to win the heart of a girl he fell in love with, etc. Of course, any time that Tim changed the past, it affected his future. I think that you get the gist of the movie.
Towards the end, Tim is receiving some advice from his father. His dad tells him that for years, he would go through each day twice. The first time would be normal, but when he would relive it, he wouldn’t change anything, but instead, he would look for the beauty in every moment of his day.
Tim did that for a while, but eventually, he decided against it. Instead, he stopped using time travel altogether. He no longer wanted to go back through each day to find the beauty; he wanted to see it the first time through.
After watching About Time, I started thinking about how I live my life. I realized that too many days go by that I don’t stop and see all the beautiful moments that God has placed in my life. I believe that God can be found in every second of our lives, not just the good ones. It’s all about the perspective that we have each day. Do we want to go through the motions or do we want to see God?
We all have an unending list of blessings that God has given us. Unfortunately, we don’t take the time to notice them. We need to stop being so focused on ourselves and what’s next on our agenda and look up every once in a while. As I’m typing this, I can look out of my window and see a beautiful blue sky and the leaves on the trees that are starting to change. What a reminder of God’s glorious creation!
We need to take a lesson from Tim. Life is always going to throw junk at us. Life is hard, we all know that. However, there is beauty in every situation. I know this to be true because there’s not a situation that we will face that God isn’t by our side. We all need to shift our eyes onto the goodness in our lives rather than the disappointing or stressful. Then, we will see all the beauty that God has placed in our everyday.
